Welcome back to Weekly Watch from Juwelier Spliedt.
Today, we are delighted to present to you an extraordinary icon from the world of haute horlogerie: the Patek Philippe Nautilus, Reference 3700/1A-050, crafted in 1979 – accompanied by an Extract from the Archives and an official Patek service from 2017.
The Nautilus 3700 is regarded as the „original Nautilus“ and was designed in 1976 by the legendary Gérald Genta. With its distinctive porthole case and perfectly integrated stainless steel bracelet, it defined an entirely new category: the luxury sports watch. This particular example stands out with its rare Safewatch engraving.
The 42 mm „Jumbo“ stainless steel case impresses with its slim profile and unmistakable shape, which continues to define the design of the entire Nautilus line to this day. The horizontal, deep blue dial reveals – depending on the light – fascinating nuances from maritime steel blue to nearly black depth.
At its heart beats the legendary Caliber 28-255 C – an ultra-thin automatic movement based on the Jaeger-LeCoultre 920. This masterpiece of watchmaking was reserved for the most exclusive timepieces of its era.
This specimen is in excellent collector's condition, having undergone a comprehensive overhaul by Patek Philippe in 2017, and comes with all relevant documentation, including the Extract from the Archives confirming its origin in 1979.
